A Tax refund is a system where shoppers buy items at full price, including tax, then apply for a refund on the paid tax before leaving the country. In general, tax refunds can be received by submitting the applicable receipts at a proper tax refund booth or kiosk before leaving the country. There are 3 main ways to get a Tax refund in Korea:

Option 1: Get a refund at the airport

Option 2: Get a refund at booths/kiosks in the city

Option 3: Some stores like Olive young in Myeongdong offer Automatic Tax Refunds. 

 

Who can apply for a tax refund in Korea

  • Non-Korean Citizens: Travelers staying in Korea for less than 6 months
  • Overseas Koreans: Travelers stayin in Korea for less than 3 months and have lived overseas for more than 2 years or holds permanent residency in another country

  • Step 0: Request for a Tax Refund Receipt if you purchase more than 30,000 won in a store. Prepare your Passport and the receipt from your purchase
  • Step 1: Look for a Tax-refund Kiosk
  • Step 2: Select a language you are comfortable with
    • You can choose from English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
  • Step 3: Scan your passport by placing it on the passport slot with the information page faced on the screen
  • Step 4: Check your Personal Information, and enter your contact details
  • Step 5: Scan the receipt's bar code on the kiosk's barcode scanner
  • Step 6: Insert your credit card and check the form details
  • Step 7: Get your refund
  • Step 8: Report the refund at the customs office or designated refund counter at the airport upon departure.
