Using an eSIM in Korea
What is an eSIM
Using an eSIM in Korea as a tourist can be a convenient way to stay connected during your trip.
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a tiny programmable chip embedded directly into a device, like a smartphone or smartwatch, that takes the place of a traditional physical SIM card. It performs the same function as a physical SIM card, authenticating your device on a cellular network and allowing you to make calls, send texts, and use data. However, unlike a physical SIM card, which you can remove and insert into another device, an eSIM is soldered onto the device's motherboard and cannot be physically taken out.
Before your trip:
- Check Compatibility: Some phones are locked to a specific provider or some models are not compatible with the eSIM. Be sure that your phone is able to use the eSIM
- Choose data plan: There are serveral carriers and plans to choose from in Korea, you can go for basic data coverage or something more extensive. SK Telecom, KT Telecom, and LGUplus are the most prominent telecoms in Korea. Compare each plan and their prices to see which fits your needs.
- Purchase/Reserve your eSIM: Visit your chosen carrier's website and choose a data plan, then pay for it or make a reservation to get more benefits and discounts.
When you arrive in Korea:
- Visit the carrier/provider's booth
- Install the eSIM: Follow the instructions provided by the eSIM provider. This usually involves the user scanning a QR code or entering a code into your phone's settings
- Activate the eSIM: Some sims may need activation by visiting thier website or with the assitance of the staff in the booth
- Start using your data: Once you have successfully activated your eSIM, you should be able to connect to the internet, make calls and send messages like the locals. Be sure to check if there are any issues before leaving the provider's booth
