Korean Visa Validity and Period of Stay: Two Different Dates to Understand
A Korean visa’s validity period and your permitted period of stay answer different questions. Confusing them can lead to booking the wrong arrival date or misunderstanding when you must leave.
The Korean Embassy in Canada explains that a visa holder must enter Korea within the visa’s validity period. The period of stay runs from entry, subject to the permission granted. Korea’s official Visa Grant Notice also warns that entry is decided during immigration inspection and that the period of stay may be changed. overseas.mofa.go.kr
Read the fields on your own notice rather than copying an example online. A useful travel record separates:
- The visa’s last permitted entry date
- Whether the visa allows one or multiple entries
- The stated period of stay
- The actual stay expiration confirmed by immigration
- Passport validity and any travel-document conditions
For example, a visa’s “valid until” date should not automatically be entered into your calendar as your departure deadline. Equally, a remaining period of stay does not itself prove that a previously used single-entry visa can be used for another entry.
After arrival, check the authorized stay recorded for you. If you later receive an extension or a change of status, use the updated immigration permission rather than relying only on the original visa notice.
If any field is unclear, ask the issuing diplomatic mission before travel or Korean immigration about your current stay. Share the exact document wording and your travel dates. Avoid guessing how days are counted when a deadline is close.
