Leaving Korea Temporarily? Check Your Re-entry Conditions Before Booking

A valid residence card does not answer every question about returning to Korea after a trip abroad. Check your status, authorized stay, passport and re-entry conditions before paying for travel.

The Korea Immigration Service’s published guidance describes a re-entry-permit exemption for eligible registered foreign residents returning within one year of departure and within their authorized period of stay. Exceptions apply, including cases excluded from the exemption. Do not treat the one-year period as an extension of your permission to stay.

Compare four dates: departure, planned return, passport expiration and the end of your authorized stay. A return within one year can still be too late if your stay expires earlier.

Before leaving, confirm:

  • Whether your exact status and circumstances qualify for exemption
  • Whether a re-entry permit is required for the length of absence
  • What happens if an extension or status-change application is pending
  • Which original documents you must carry
  • Whether a recent change in school, employment or family circumstances affects your status

Keep copies of official advice and any approval, but carry the original documents required for travel. An airline’s document check and immigration’s admission decision are separate processes.

If plans change abroad, contact Korean immigration or the relevant Korean diplomatic mission before assuming that a later flight is acceptable. Do not rely only on another resident’s experience with a different status.

Review the Korea Immigration Service’s official Visa Navigator and obtain case-specific instructions through Korea Immigration Service or 1345 before departure.

Official guidance checked: October 19, 2026. This summarizes an existing published rule, not a newly announced 2026 policy. Individual eligibility and exceptions must be confirmed.
