Using RISS to Find Korean Academic Research

Using RISS to Find Korean Academic Research
A general web search may miss the journal articles and theses you need for a university assignment. RISS offers an academic search route for Korean research, including journal articles, dissertations, books and serials.
Begin with a research question rather than a broad subject. “How do international students use campus libraries?” produces a more useful search plan than “international students.” Write down related English and Korean terms, then test several combinations.
Open the full record before deciding that a result is relevant. Check the author, publication year, institution or journal, abstract and document type. A thesis, a journal article and a conference paper can serve different purposes in an assignment.
The RISS guide explains that an available full-text option opens the linked material. However, finding a record does not mean that every item can be downloaded freely. If access is restricted, ask your university librarian whether the institution provides access or an appropriate document-delivery service.
Keep a small research log containing the title, author, year, stable link and a sentence explaining why the source matters. Record page numbers while taking notes. This makes it easier to check quotations and build a bibliography later.
Read beyond the abstract before relying on a paper’s conclusions. Look at the methods, sample, limitations and publication date. If you use translation software, compare important terminology with the original and follow your course’s academic-integrity rules.
Start with RISS International and its official full-record guide.
