Campus Counseling in Korea: A Guide for International Students

Academic pressure, homesickness, relationship problems and uncertainty about life in another language can build slowly. International students do not need to wait for a crisis before asking what support is available.

The government-operated Study in Korea service says the National Institute for International Education provides information and counseling for people studying in Korea. Topics can include schools, study, scholarships and life in Korea. Your university may also have an international office, student counseling center, academic adviser, health center or disability-support office.

Choose the office that matches the problem

Start with the international office when you are unsure where to go. Prepare a short explanation covering:

  • The issue and when it began
  • Any approaching academic or administrative deadline
  • The course, dormitory or office involved
  • Your preferred language
  • Times when you can attend an appointment
  • Whether you need urgent safety or medical help
  • Documents you want the adviser to review

Ask whether the service is confidential, whether interpretation is available and whether an appointment is required. Also ask what information may need to be shared if there is an immediate risk of harm or another legal duty to report.

Counseling is not only for emergencies. It can help a student organize stress, adjust to a new environment and identify the correct next step. However, a counselor may not be the person who can change a grade, approve a leave of absence, extend a dormitory contract or decide an immigration matter. Ask for a referral to the responsible office when an official decision is needed.

If a health or safety situation is urgent, use emergency medical or police services rather than waiting for a routine campus appointment. For a non-emergency academic problem, contact the instructor and academic office before the applicable deadline even if a counseling session is also scheduled.

Keep appointment details private and use the university’s official booking channel. Do not send medical records, passport copies or intimate personal information to an unverified social-media account.

See the official Study in Korea counseling page for national guidance, then check your university’s current student-support directory.

Official counseling information checked: October 12, 2026. Services, languages, confidentiality rules and appointment methods vary by institution.
