Initial Adjustment Support in Korea: A Practical Orientation for New Arrivals

The first weeks in Korea can involve many unfamiliar systems at once: transportation, housing, immigration rules, public services and everyday etiquette. The Korea Immigration Service operates an Initial Adjustment Support Program to give newly arrived foreign residents practical information for settling in more confidently.

The official program description says the orientation covers useful everyday information, basic law and order, and the immigration system. It is separate from a long-term Korean-language course. The focus is on information that can help a newcomer understand responsibilities and find the right official service.

Check the course designed for your situation

The program includes a two-hour common course. Additional one-hour content is listed for certain groups, including working-visit visa holders, marriage migrants and foreign entertainers. The exact course, language, date and provider should be confirmed when applying.

Before registration, prepare:

  • Your passport and current status-of-stay information
  • Your Korean address and reachable telephone number
  • The date you entered Korea
  • The course language you need
  • Any accessibility or interpretation question
  • Your Socinet account details, if already registered

The Immigration Service instructs participants to register on Socinet and apply for the Initial Orientation Course for Immigrants. Search carefully for the course that matches your participant group and region. A listing on the calendar does not guarantee that seats remain available.

Save the confirmation and check whether the class is online or in person. For an in-person class, confirm the building, room, identification requirement and arrival time. For an online class, test the login, microphone and connection before the session.

The orientation provides general guidance; it does not decide an individual visa, contract or legal dispute. If your question concerns a deadline, work permission or a required immigration report, contact the Immigration Contact Center at 1345 for instructions tied to your case.

Read the Korea Immigration Service’s official Initial Adjustment Support Program guide and apply through Socinet.

Program content and application route checked: October 12, 2026. Course schedules, languages and available providers can vary.
