Volunteering in Korea: How Foreign Residents Can Join a Local Community Project

Volunteering can help foreign residents meet neighbors and contribute practical skills to their community. A good first project is one with clear duties, a manageable schedule and an organizer who can explain the work in a language you understand.

The 1365 Volunteer Portal is a starting point for finding opportunities. Seoul also provides an English guide to joining the portal. Registration and acceptance into an activity are separate steps: creating an account does not reserve a place or establish eligibility for every project. english.seoul.go.kr

Before applying, read the live notice and ask the organizer about:

• Age, residence and language requirements
• Exact duties, meeting point and finishing time
• Training, clothing and equipment
• Accessibility and physical demands
• Insurance arrangements and emergency contacts
• How attendance and volunteer hours are recorded

Choose an activity that fits your experience. Sorting donated supplies may require different preparation from working with children, older people or animals. Tell the organizer honestly about your language level and any task you cannot safely perform.

Ask whether an application is confirmed, waiting-listed or still under review. Save the coordinator’s contact details and notify them promptly if you cannot attend. On the day, arrive early enough for the briefing and follow the assigned role rather than starting an unapproved activity.

Respect the privacy of people receiving support. Ask before taking photographs, and do not post names, faces or personal stories without appropriate consent. Keep any documents or contact lists provided for the activity confidential.

If you need proof of participation, confirm the recording process beforehand. Volunteer hours do not automatically become academic credit or an immigration benefit. If an arrangement involves payment or resembles employment, check the relevant immigration requirements before accepting it.
