Choosing a Mobile Plan in Korea: Check the Full Cost Before Signing

A mobile plan’s advertised price is only one part of the decision. Foreign residents should compare the service they need, the documents accepted and the total cost over their expected time in Korea.

KT’s official guidance distinguishes plans available to passport holders from products requiring a residence card. This illustrates why a tourist SIM and a resident’s monthly plan should not be assumed to have identical eligibility or functions. Other carriers apply their own product requirements. LTE WELCOME PREPAID

Before signing, ask for a written explanation of:

  • Monthly or recharge cost, including tax
  • High-speed data allowance and speed after it is used
  • Included calls, messages and extra charges
  • Contract length and early-cancellation charges
  • Separate handset installments or insurance
  • SIM or eSIM compatibility with your phone
  • Eligibility for Korean online identity verification

Check whether a quoted discount depends on a particular contract, payment card or bundled service. Ask what happens when the promotional period ends. “Unlimited” data may still have a speed limit after a stated allowance.

Have the provider explain how your name and identification number will be registered. Confirm that you can receive calls and messages before leaving the store, and save the contract and customer-service details.

If you are keeping an existing number, ask about the transfer procedure before canceling the old account. Before leaving Korea, settle the final bill and confirm how cancellation affects any remaining device payments.
