How to Read Korea’s Weather Forecast Before Leaving Home

A weather icon for Seoul or Busan cannot describe every neighborhood or every hour of the day. For commuting, outdoor work or a weekend trip, check the location and time period behind the forecast before deciding what to carry.

The Korea Meteorological Administration’s English website separates current observations, forecasts, radar information and weather warnings. Its local forecast service allows searches at the eup, myeon or dong level. Use the destination as well as your home area when your journey crosses the city or region. Read the information in this order:

• Confirm the place and forecast issue time.
• Select the hours when you will be outdoors, including the return trip.
• Compare temperature, precipitation, wind and any warnings.
• Check again before departure if conditions are changing.

Current observations describe measured conditions. Forecasts describe expected future conditions. A radar image shows recent precipitation patterns and can help you understand approaching rain, but it does not guarantee exactly when rain will reach your street.

Keep probability and amount separate. A precipitation probability does not tell you that rain will fall for that percentage of the day. Look at the time interval and any forecast rainfall amount as well. Pay attention to units: temperature is normally shown in degrees Celsius, rainfall in millimeters and wind may be shown in meters per second.

Pack for the part of the day that is most demanding. A light morning jacket may become useful again after sunset, while an umbrella alone may be inconvenient in strong wind. For outdoor plans, identify somewhere indoors where you can wait if conditions worsen.

Read an official warning for its affected area and valid period. Check the venue or transport operator separately for closures or cancellations; a weather forecast does not confirm that a trail, ferry or event is operating.
