Leaving Korea? Check Whether You Qualify for a National Pension Refund
Leaving Korea does not automatically entitle every foreign worker to a National Pension lump-sum refund. The National Pension Service determines eligibility through applicable social-security agreements, reciprocity rules and certain status-of-stay categories.
An important distinction concerns E-8: the NPS visa-based refund guidance includes the former employment-training category. Its Korean guidance specifically distinguishes today’s E-8 seasonal-worker category, which does not qualify through that particular visa-based route. Eligibility through another applicable rule needs separate assessment. nps.or.kr
Before booking a final appointment, ask the NPS to check your nationality, insured periods and status history. Prepare your pension record and explain whether you are permanently departing or only taking a temporary trip.
The NPS lists an application, passport, residence card and proof of a bank account in the applicant’s name among the relevant documents. An application made before departure requires evidence of departure scheduled within one month. Confirm the documents for your payment method and individual circumstances. nps.or.kr
Check that your name matches across your passport, pension record and bank documents. For an overseas account, ask which bank details and supporting evidence are required. Keep a copy of the application and a contact method that will still work after departure.
Do not assume that filing means immediate payment or that an airport collection service is available in every case. Ask when payment can be made, what departure confirmation is needed and how to correct a rejected transfer.
