Job-Seeking Benefits in Korea: What to Do After Employment Ends
Losing a job does not automatically start unemployment payments. A former employee must check eligibility, report unemployment and follow the employment office’s process for recognizing active job seeking.
Under Korea’s Employment Insurance Act, job-seeking benefits generally require at least 180 qualifying days in covered employment during the applicable base period. The person must be able and willing to work but still unemployed, and the reason for leaving must not fall within a statutory disqualification. Special rules apply to daily workers and some other cases.
Organize your separation record
Prepare accurate copies of:
- Employment contract and amendments
- Recorded start and end dates
- Notice of dismissal, contract expiration or resignation
- Wage statements and bank deposits
- Employment-insurance history
- Work schedules and attendance records
- Messages explaining why the employment ended
- Employer’s job-leaving certificate or separation information
The Act says a person who wants job-seeking benefits should report unemployment without delay. That report includes a job-seeking application and an application for recognition of benefit eligibility. A former worker may request data from the employer verifying covered-employment days and contractual working hours.
Do not guess the separation reason or ask an employer to enter information that is untrue. A resignation, contract expiration, dismissal or departure for a recognized unavoidable reason can be assessed differently. If the employer’s record does not match what happened, keep the evidence and raise the discrepancy through the official process.
After applying, record every designated reporting date and required reemployment activity. Paid work, short shifts, freelance income or another change during the recognition period may need to be reported. Failure to report work accurately can affect payment and may lead to repayment or sanctions.
Foreign workers should separately check immigration consequences. Eligibility for employment-insurance benefits does not itself extend a period of stay or authorize a new job.
Read the current Employment Insurance Act, especially Articles 40, 42 and 43, and use the official Employment24 portal or the responsible employment center for an individual application.
Law and official application route checked: October 12, 2026. Eligibility and payment depend on the insured record, separation reason and individual circumstances.
