Support for Passport Issuance Fees for Japanese Tourists Visiting Jeju
However, some media outlets have reported that the saying "For the cost of a trip to Jeju, you can go to Japan" is becoming a reality, in light of declining domestic tourism spending in Korea. According to Maeil Business Newspaper, as of the first quarter of 2025, domestic tourist spending in Jeju decreased by 19% year-on-year to 175.4 billion won.
This trend is attributed to neighboring countries such as Japan and China ramping up efforts to attract tourists through visa exemptions or streamlined travel policies. Accordingly, there is a possibility that Jeju or the Korean government may introduce incentives, such as covering passport issuance fees, to attract more Japanese tourists.
If such policies are announced in the future, they will be available through official channels such as the Jeju Provincial Government website, the Korea Tourism Organization, or the Embassy of Japan in Korea.
