Pope Francis, who dedicated his entire life to the poor and marginalized, reportedly left behind only $100—approximately 140,000 Korean won—after his passing.
According to Argentine media outlet Ámbito, citing the celebrity net worth site 'Celebrity Net Worth,' this is all that remained in his name.
The report stated that while the average monthly salary for a cardinal ranges between $4,700 and $5,900, Pope Francis served without pay after becoming pope.
Since being elected pope in March 2013, he declared that he would not receive a salary, a decision rooted in his vow of poverty as a member of the Jesuit order, committing to a life of humility and simplicity.
Born in Argentina in 1936, Pope Francis devoted himself to serving the poor in the slums of Buenos Aires before becoming pope. Even during his time as a cardinal, he chose public transportation over luxury cars and lived in a small apartment.
His character was also reflected in his choice of papal name, "Francis."
Saint Francis (1181–1226) was a native of Assisi, Italy, known as the "saint of the poor." Unlike his predecessors who chose names like Paul, John, or Benedict, Pope Francis was the first to adopt the name Francis, expressing his commitment to never forget the poor and marginalized.
His humble lifestyle continued after ascending to the papacy.
He chose to live not in the luxurious papal apartments within the Vatican, but in the Santa Marta residence, a guesthouse for Vatican clergy.
He also wore a worn-out cross instead of the traditional gold papal cross and opted for plain black shoes over the customary red papal footwear.
During his 2014 visit to South Korea, he garnered attention by using a Kia Soul instead of an official state vehicle.
The worn iron cross he wore, his old shoes, and his decades-old bag became a topic of discussion during the visit.
Remaining humble, frugal, and unpretentious throughout his life, Pope Francis’ funeral will be conducted on April 26 in the Vatican. As per the simplified funeral procedure he personally revised last November, the ceremony will be greatly simplified.
Pope Francis will not be laid to rest in the traditional papal burial site of St. Peter’s Basilica, but rather in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, located near the Argentine Embassy in Italy.
