(Q)  After March 9, 2020, are Japanese nationals required to obtain a visa to enter the Republic of Korea?

(A) As all visa-free entry measures have been suspended for valid Japanese passport holders (including diplomat and official passports), Japanese passport holders must obtain a visa in order to enter the Republic of Korea after midnight (00:00) March 9, 2020.

  • - However, Japanese nationals whose foreigner registration (including permanent residency) or domestic residence report is valid in Korea, or when the Japanese national is an APEC Business Traveler cardholder, they will be eligible to enter Korea visa-free.

(Q)  What happens to the validity of visas previously issued by the Korean embassies or consulates located in Japan?

(A) As of midnight (00:00) March 9, 2020, all valid visas issued to Japanese nationals by the Korean embassies or consulates in Japan have been temporarily suspended.

  • - Therefore, valid visas will not be suspended when a foreign national other than Japanese holds a valid visa issued by a Korean embassy or consulate in Japan, or when a Japanese national holds a visa issued by a Korean embassy or consulate located in other than Japan.

(Q) Can a foreign national other than Japanese enter the Republic of Korea with a visa issued by a Korean embassy or consulate in Japan?

(A) As the visa suspension measure regarding valid visas issued by the Korean embassies or consulates in Japan only applies to Japanese nationals, foreign nationals other than Japanese who were issued a valid visa from the Korean embassies or consulates in Japan will be able to enter the Republic of Korea.
